PUWER '98 (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998) places duties on all employers who own, operate or have control over work equipment. Work equipment is defined as any machinery, apparatus or tool which is used at work. For manufacturing, the focus is on industrial machinery as most industrial machines can cause a major injury if not suitable / maintained correctly to avoid deterioration.

As an employer, there is a responsibility placed on you to ensure that machinery is safe to use, and the most common way is having a strong PUWER inspection regime for work equipment at appropriate intervals.
